Synthesis scheme benzene ring to phenylvalerolactam

From a post on Yahoo!Answers in chemistry

The actual question asks from benzene and two or three carbon pieces. There are many ways of doing this. I was thinking a conjugate addition. So I used the following route. The lactam piece is from an aldol of acetaldehyde, oxidation to acid, esterification, bromination (I think may be an Organic Synthesis prep), substitution, conjugate addition, catalytic reduction. The amine will spontaneously form the lactam. There are other ways of doing this. I am posting this simply as it may provide impetus for using alternates. I would also consider alternate coupling reactions with the phenyl bromide. They could be done in either direction.
