The scheme and steps are conjugate addition with Gilman reagent, Bayer-Villiger oxidation, saponification, chromic acid oxidation, second Bayer-Villiger oxidation to product. Different reagents may be substituted for MCPBA, for example peracetic acid or the oxidation, Swern, PCC, or other oxidation.
