Methylcyclohexene bromine/water to epoxide and HBr opening

The complete mechanisms for these or similar reactions are in A Guide to Organic Chemistry Mechanisms (, Barnes and Noble). I suggest you try writing the mechanisms from the minisampler.

I was reviewing a professor's podcast in which a number of reactions were discussed. The interesting thing for me was that he said students should know the chemistry, but didn't need to know the mechanisms. To me, this is like know the products of two numbers and saying to didn't need to know how to multiply. I would prefer if students didn't know the products, but knew how to multiply. Is it just me?
